GriefShare

What is GriefShare?

The finality of death is hard to accept, because grief is disruptive and disorienting. If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member or friend, you’ve probably found that there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. What’s worse is that some people will make you feel like you are overreacting to the death of your loved one and that is what GriefShare is about ... getting you to accept that reality so that you can go on with your life. This group is sponsored by people who understand what you are experiencing and want to offer you comfort and encouragement during this difficult time.

GriefShare features biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics and includes subjects such as “Living with Grief”, “The Effects of Grief”, When your Spouse dies”, “Why?” and “God’s prescription for Grief”.

Almost everyone knows someone dealing with loss; it may be a friend, family member, neighbour or co-worker hurting deeply. People may have a desire to help the grieving person, but do not know how to reach out. By referring them to the GriefShare group, they can share their hurt with a person who has experienced grief and that has been through the grief process.

What does a typical GriefShare session consists of?

Each GriefShare session includes a:

  1. Video seminar;
  2. Group discussion; and
  3. Workbook and journaling exercise

The videos are compiled by about 45 top experts on grief and recovery subjects and include speakers in the likes of Jonie Eareckson Tada, Barbara Johnson, Zig Ziglar and Janet Paschal.

After viewing the video, you’ll participate in a small group discussion about what you’ve seen on the video. You’ll also have the opportunity to interact with others who have experienced a recent loss. This is then followed by the workbook exercise and completion of the journal at home.

These three elements are critical parts of your healing process. By completing each will help you find answers to the following questions:

  • Is it okay for me to grieve?
  • How long will my grief last?
  • How do I deal with these overwhelming emotions? and
  • How should I handle the big decisions that need to be made?

When should one start attending these sessions?

People are welcome to begin attending the GriefShare group at any session. Each is “self-contained,” so you do not have to attend in sequence. You will find encouragement and help whenever you begin.

When will the next series start?

Our next series starts at february 2012 and the series consists of 13 weekly sessions which will take place every Tuesday evening. Our first session is called “Living with Grief” which will prepare people for the grieving process. Please contact the church office or the weekend bulletin for more information or contact Janette Sevenster 082 873 7815.
